WA Week One – May 6 – May 13
It’s day 6 of our WA visit. We’ve had terrific weather with mild, sunny days and chilly nights…think 72F/48F. Who can’t handle that? Our motor home is practically new and an upgrade from the one we had last year but the layout isn’t as practical for us, so we are a little disappointed with this aspect. The first 2+ days we spent provisioning in Perth. We kept returning to the same shopping centre since it had a Bunnings (like Home Depot), a Kmart & Target, a giant liquor store, and the usual grocers. We decided before we left Melbourne to buy bicycles here since we would probably rent them in a few choice locations. Checking the ads, we managed to pick up a decent 2nd hand one for me for $40. One morning we met up with a business friend of Joe’s for coffee and recommendations on where to go. We spent 2 nights on a “gentleman’s ranch” just north of the vineyard-infused Swan Valley where a couple friends have made a lovely 14-acre patch of paddocks for a few cows, chickens and citrus trees. Jeff has lent Joe his bike so we are all set. Today we headed to Freemantle and we’ve already decided to extend our stay by a day. We are in a nice caravan park and its an easy bike ride into Freo. So far its been really laid back with a couple lazy lunches and not a lot of exhilarating activity or excitement. We are going to ferry out to Rottnest Island on Tuesday and our bikes will come in handy to circumnavigate it. Then we plan to leave the big city life for a while.
